Michigan Philharmonic Receives Grant from the Knight Foundation

Michigan Philharmonic Receives Major Funding for Multi-Cultural Concerts

Plymouth, Michigan—the Michigan Philharmonic announced today that it received a $40,000 grant from the John S and James L. Knight Foundation to be used for a multi-cultural Bollywood Music Festival to be performed at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit on May 19 and 20, 2012.

The grant will help fund a large Bollywood Music Festival which will feature the Michigan Philharmonic under the direction of Music Director and Conductor, Nan Washburn along with professional Indian musicians, vocalists and instrumentalists.  The 2 day festival will also include workshops on Indian Music and Dance.

The Michigan Philharmonic has garnered a name for itself in SE Michigan as an orchestra which performs a wide variety of music from the traditional classics to contemporary fare including music from other cultures and traditions.  The orchestra will partner with the Indian Community  as well as The Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts.  The Music Hall has adopted a wide-range of unique and interesting programming creating its own niche in the arts offerings of Detroit and this Bollywood Festival will be a great addition to its performance schedule.

The Michigan Philharmonic – Classical with a Twist

The Michigan Philharmonic is a professional orchestra performing concerts throughout the Detroit Metro Area.  Classical programming includes a 6 concert subscription series, including performances of contemporary classical music by living American Composers on every concert;  performances of THE NUTCRACKER;   “Koncerts for Kids” as part of educational programs for students from 8 – 18 which also includes the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; Multi-cultural concerts; Backstage Pass; Musical Treats and other classic activities geared for audiences of all ages and interests.
